Fashion designer Barbaros Şansal continues his legal struggle after being lynched at Atatürk Airport. Şansal attended the hearing at the Supreme Court today.

After the local court's 'rejection' decision, Şansal took the case to the higher court. Şansal and his lawyers attended the hearing today at the 3rd Civil Chamber of the Supreme Court of Appeals in Ankara.

Şansal made the following statements to Gazete Duvar after the hearing: “Today was a historic day again. We applied to the 3rd Civil Chamber of the Ankara Supreme Court of Appeals to eliminate the unlawfulness I was exposed to and to ensure justice was served. Dear Merve Aksoy (lawyer) also made excellent defenses. In my statements, beyond victimization, I tried to explain that Turkey was disgraced and victimized to the world. Mine is something like domestic violence, I said I don't care much. Is Barbaros Şansal, who introduced Turkey to the world, being introduced to the world with this? Are we hopeful about the outcome? No alimony, long live AKP!”

LAWYER ALINAK: WE STATED THAT THE DECISION WAS MADE UNLAWFULLY

Şansal's lawyer Bişar Abdi Altınak said: “Barbaros Şansal's In the case of material and moral compensation for the attack he suffered at Atatürk Airport, the local court ruled Barbaros Şansal to pay 10 thousand lira in non-pecuniary damages. However, in terms of pecuniary damages, both the local court and the appeal stated that there was no damage. Our colleagues in Istanbul followed the file here. After this stage, we received the file. We stated that the damage determined by the expert reports at the hearing could not be determined by the court and that the decision was made unlawfully. For this reason, we filed a defense requesting that the Supreme Court panel overturn the decision against us.”


What happened?

Barbaros Şansal January 2017' He was also deported from Northern Cyprus, citing social media posts. On the same day, the Istanbul Chief Public Prosecutor's Office issued a detention order against Şansal on the charge of "inciting the public to hatred and hostility or humiliating". In his post, Şansal said, "Are you still celebrating the new year while so many journalists are being detained, so many children are being harassed and raped, so much corruption and bribes are running rampant, and bigots are spreading filth in the streets along with the preachers?" and said, "Drown in your shit."

Şansal, who was brought to Istanbul on a Turkish Airlines (THY) flight, was detained after the plane landed. The people gathered on the apron first verbally insulted Şansal, who was taken off the plane accompanied by the police. As Şansal tried to get away, the crowd gathered attacked him. Most of the attackers were ground personnel working at Atatürk Airport.

After the incident, Bakırköy Chief Public Prosecutor's Office prepared an indictment and filed a lawsuit against those who attacked Şansal. In the indictment, a prison term of 1 year to 5 years and 4 months was requested for 13 people for "simple injury", "threat" and "insult".
